There are riches in niches, writes Brian Morrissey in his The Rebooting newsletter, in reaction to news of Industry Drive’s acquisition by Informa.

“There’s no one way to win in publishing, as in most things, but it’s worth observing successful models to understand what they did right, even if that’s no guarantee of success,” writes Brian, who will be one of our speakers at Media Makers Meet (Mx3) in Berlin, Germany on 19-20 October, where we will discuss playbooks for B2B and special interest media verticals.

In his latest post, he says, “What Industry Dive built over a decade — 26 focused publications in 23 industry segments, over $100 million in revenue and nicely profitable — should be a new model for an army of clones after it inked a deal to sell to events giant Informa for an enterprise value of $525 million. At a time when it can seem most publishing ventures don’t make money, Industry Dive regularly returned healthy profit margins while scaling to top $100 million in annual revenue.”

He goes on to list (and expand on) some of the reasons he sees for Industry Dive’s success:

  • Keep it simple
  • Have a playbook
  • Embrace ads
  • Make smart bets
  • Niche doesn’t mean small
